MUNGO JERRY : When She Comes, She Runs All Over Me

There’s no stopping Ray Dorset these days. Fresh from the triumphant Naked From The Heart, he’s gone back to his Blues Band and pulled off another ace with the follow-up to Adults Only.

This time around, there are no cover versions among the ten songs, though keen-eyed (and eared) MJ fans will readily recognise two from Ray’s back catalogue. My Own Country was first recorded with the Good Earth in 1968 and took a bow recently on the Gonna Bop Till I Drop anthology. Here it sounds all moody, with wonderful melodic lead guitar and harmonica evoking early Bob Dylan. Where You Are, long recognised by those in the know as one of Ray’s most thought-provoking lyrics ever, gets a heavy, epic treatment which in my view (rightly) gives it far more weight than the treatment it had on the Candy Dreams album a few years ago.

As for the rest – opening up is Married Woman Blues, a mid-tempo piece with great stinging guitar and dark lonesome harmonica. Feeling the Blues rings the changes, a more uptempo rocker with wonderful bass line, and just a little nod to Singing the Blues – or is it just a similarity in title that brings the earlier song to mind? Maybe – but then Ray, like so many rock’n’rollers before him, has always had that knack of absorbing those influences from the best of the classics.

I Had a Bird is probably the sweetest song (in the best possible way) to be heard here. The lyric is almost nursery rhyme-like in its simplicity, and as we know, Ray has always has a knack for writing catchy children’s songs as well. A gentle swaying rhythmic bassline leads into mellow keyboard, poignant guitar and harmonica before the vocal comes in.

The title track, more or less a 12-bar, introduces itself with a thunderous harmonica riff, and – oh yes! – read into the title what you want. Adults only, or is it a love song to a female athlete? The choice is yours…

Kicking Back is aptly titled. A real stomper this one, that calls the likes of Slade or the Stones to mind. Then the mood goes all romantic again, with the delightful I Miss You, a slow dreamy song that will come as no surprise to fans who know and love past MJ delights such as See you Again from Boot Power, or How can I live a lie.

That leaves just two more. The Wind is Blowing is another mean, moody and magnificent blues song with shimmering keyboard and a kinda B.B. King or Gary Moore groove. Finally, Lovely Holyday is anything but the blues – a real party tune to say goodbye with, a true Mungo having fun in the sun song with a Caribbean feel that instantly conjures up images of dancing in the streets, or even on the beach. Even when listened to in the car on a cold wet December evening (very appropriate for the previous track), it still brings that good-time summer vibe.

So let’s take our hats off to Klaus (the drums), Achim, Klaus (the bass), Michael and of course The Main Man for another 24-carat cracker. Again, you’ve set yourself a formidable standard to live up to, guys!

It's hard to believe that it has been five years since the first Mungo Jerry Bluesband CD hit the shops. The long awaited 2nd instalment from Ray Dorset and the German boys has finally arrived. Released on the Easyplay label it contains some wonderful additions to the Mungo Jerry range. It maybe a bluesband but it sure can rock.

A re-worked version of the Good Earth song My Own Country brings to life a song that was originally released 40 years ago. Finally issued as a Mungo Jerry song on CD is Lovely Holiday that was first issued on the South African Horizon LP. Stand out tracks include Feeling the Blues an upbeat singalong that is as far from down trodden as you can get, and the wonderful I Miss You proving once again the varied styles that can emanate from the Dorset pen.
