After a long five+ year wait, we have arrived at the release of a new Testament album with "Para Bellum." Despite the departure of Gene Hoglan and having Dave Lombardo for a couple of tours, newcomer Chris Dovas (formerly of Seven Spires) makes an impact in a huge way on this album with his youthful energy on the drum kit. While things have changed drastically in the five years since "Titans of Creation," one can argue Testament has changed their sound slightly with this album. While it still remains Testament at its core, we get some new spices added to this thrash metal recipe they've created for themselves. Perhaps this album could be the band's most extreme, brutal, and melodic album yet.

Some of the spices that are being added to this album include elements of death metal and black metal. "For the Love of Pain" is where you get the best of both worlds combined into their thrash sound. Blast beats, low-end tremolos of death metal, and cold tremolos of black metal. Eric Peterson's screams compliment Chuck Billy's roars throughout the track. "Infanticide A.I." might be the band's most brutal and evil song of their career. Dark melodies and harmonies combined with vicious tremolo riffing and sinister machine gun guitars while Chuck Billy delivers venomous thoughts about A.I. and its consequences. "Meant to Be" is what I would consider the third part of a trilogy of ballads/dirges that began with "Return to Serenity," followed by "Cold Embrace," and now, this song. I would even say that it's the best ballad/dirge of their career as it's filled with so much emotional weight, somber melodies, and dark atmosphere. "Nature of the Beast" brings in some classic metal/hard rock flare to the riffing and rhythm. Almost like if Testament co-wrote a track with Van Halen and Judas Priest. The title track was the perfect closer with everything this album has to offer into one song with chugs, groove, thrash, tremolo, blasts, and harmonies.

Everyone got a chance to shine through on this album. Eric Peterson bringing out heavier riffs. Alex Skolnick being Alex Skolnick at creating gorgeous melody and leads. This was arguably Steve DiGiorgio's best bass performance in his tenure with Testament as he unleashes some tasteful bass melodies. And of course, Chuck Billy remains a top tier vocalist even at 63 years old as his voice has aged like a fine wine. I and perhaps many others could make a case for "Para Bellum" being Testament's best work since "The Formation of Damnation." While this is the first time since "Demonic" where Andy Sneap didn't do any production work as Jens Bogren comes in to mix, which makes this album sounds more grand in tone and feel. Buy this album if you haven't listened to Testament in a while. This is a great time to get back into them.
