JUDAS PRIEST DOESN'T MATCH EXPECTATIONS

Judas Priest didn't live up to expectations Saturday night as the band played a two-hour set at the Long Beach Arena that was aired live on the ABC rockradio network to more than 5 million listeners. It wasn't that Judas Priest played badly, it was just that the show was lackluster and several popular songs were left out. "Screaming for Vengence" and "Heading out to the Highway," two of the bands trademark songs, were omitted to make room for six cuts from the "Defenders of Faith" album. Judging the band's performance by the songs they did play, it seems that something was missing. Perhaps it was the flashy style of the band's guitarists, K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton. Usually the two sway in unison to the beat of the songs. This time that was gone. Even the powerful voice of Rob Halford seemed to be showing signs of age. Listening to the replay of the concert was proof that his once booming voice was now scratchy and boomless. The highpoints of the evening were "Sinner," "Victim of Changes" and "Grinder." On these tunes, the band was together and Halford sounded like he did in the old days. But on songs like "You've Got Another Thing Coming," "Hell Bent for Leather" and "Love Bites," Judas Priest seemed headed for crucifiction. It was a disappointing evening for many of the 13,000 in attendence. At least the listeners at home could switch the dial.
