Marquis de Sade - Somewhere Up in the Mountains/Black Angel

This single is a legendary gem among the NWOBHM circles. Among the dozens of obscure bands from the time period, this particular release is not only quite rare, but also sought after, but with good reason! Marquis de Sade's very short career is very well showcased with this single, and like with many of the more underground bands from the NWOBHM time period, it's a wonder why they didn't get more than just their own small cult following.

The A-Side is Somewhere Up in the Mountains, this is a very dreamlike and nostalgic sounding hard rock/metal ballad, complete with cheesy synthesizers and a very mid tempo riff. Nonetheless, this ballad is very catchy. Chris Gordelier's voice soars over this mix and is absolute perfect for the mood of this song. I cannot think of a single thing wrong with this track. The atmosphere really reflects the title well, as if going up to a mountain peak yourself. Truly a classic track, for a truly solid band that you can't help but keep playing over and over.

The B-side of the album Black Angel is where the band gets a little heavier with their sound, playing a straight balls to the wall metal track. Once again, their performance on this side of the record is very well done. This track definitely has a early NWOBHM sound to it, but even then has aged very well after nearly 30 years. While the song doesn't necessarily do anything unique and innovative, it still is a very solid, and addicting track.

The whole single is one definitely worth listening to, and worth owning if you can actually find a copy. A very good, very atmospheric, and very dreamlike approach with some very anthemic NWOBHM songs. It's only a wonder why this band ended so early, because their potential was truly something great. I definitely would recommend this album to others to check out. Truly amazing stuff from an amazing band.

Almost every hardcore N.W.O.B.H.M. collector I know seems to have a copy of Traitors Gate’s 1984 debut (and only official release) EP. It’s really unfortunate when amazing bands don’t receive much attention in their time only to 20 years later on become genre favourites. Which is really what has happened with Traitors Gate while not being a well known N.W.O.B.H.M. band there’s a huge underground demand for their one and only EP released on English label “Bullet Records” (Often mistaken to be a French label). Which would explain the three figure price tag normally attached to this 12” compared to all the other Bullet LP’s which can be picked up significantly cheaper.

Devil Takes the High Road is a diverse effort as far as material style and aesthetics are concerned. Traitors Gate don’t assume any specific persona with their music which is always good when you’ve got good song writing to back it up. Devil Takes the High Road begins with an ominous wind blowing which is soon joined by some powerful riffs and profound lyrics, pretty much straight away you can tell you’re listening to craftsman who are the best at their trade. Fully utilizing “light & shade” song writing dynamics when the song later speeds up with it’s cutting riffs and duel Carl Sentance style vocals. Persian Risk are an obvious influence playing similar but less varied melodic traditional metal with song writing being a main point of focus. Also being local Welsh heroes would enforce this presumption; it’s easy to love what’s closer to you especially if it’s done as well as Persian Risk. Love after Midnight is the first song that caught my ear initially from this EP. One of the greatest melodic N.W.O.B.H.M. tracks written for sure, With it’s wondering pace and late night rendezvous atmosphere. Not to mention the combination of catchy as hell riffs and vocal arrangements, really something special and underrated by other fans. Shoot to Kill while having more simplistic structures and not focusing on atmosphere quite as much makes up for it in speed and aggression, More comparable to faster acts of the time like; Jaguar or Blitzkrieg.

With good song writing of course musicianship is above average, with the amazing Robby Jones on vocals who sounds something like Carl Sentance though not quite as charismatic or over the top with a little more mid ranged aggression to call upon, but the vocal harmonies are definitely in Persian Risk vein. Guitarist Andy Turner is a song writing man (Being the main song writer aboard) focusing on well written and arranged songs that are melodic yet biting enough to keep them away from the more commercial acts of the time. As appose to being a straight out shredder, though his leads are very stylish and fitting. Drummer Paul House also lays down some nice fills and steady stick work throughout the EP highlighted during the mid-paced Love after Midnight giving him more of a chance to let loose.

Overall Traitors Gate are one of the best of those elegantly melodic, yet biting, “Well spoken” sounding N.W.O.B.H.M. bands of which other include; Persian Risk (Founders of the style?), Tok-io Rose, Mendes Prey etc. They certainly set a high standard of achievement for all of those mentioned bands to compete against with their sublime, diverse song writing and high ability to create mythical-tinged atmosphere material. Current market price for this little beauty ranges from around $150 - $200 US if you find it for any less it’s worth picking up without a second thought. A N.W.O.B.H.M. collectable that’s well worth the praise and price tag, Hell I’d almost pick it up alone for the magnificent illustration work on the front cover.

Wikkyd Vikker - Black of the Night

"Review Wikkyd Vikker"
Wikkyd Vikker, despite having one of the stupidest name I have had the misfortune of coming across, is also a terrible band that can barely be called Metal at all.

When they're not ripping off Iron Maiden (see the slow part at around 3:20 in 'Black of the Night') or trying to be 'emotional' by whining over no instrumentation at all, Wikkyd Vikker are still a bad band. The guitarists can't write a good riff if their life depended on it, and so out comes some random hard rock riffs which lack any punch or power at all, and some soloing that they stole off Iron Maiden. The drummer can be barely heard in the shitty production job, but it doesn't matter as all he does is provide the most basic of drum beats. And then there is the vocalist. I'm being 100% serious when I say this, but this guy whines in a way that is not too far off todays infestation of mallcore bands. He doesn't do it all the time though. When he doesn't he simply sings in a slurred monotone, and his voice lacks any power at all. The song lengths are far too long for their own good. Half of the six and a half minute song 'Release' is filled up with some guitarist who can barely solo playing whatever comes into his head. When it's not instrumental, the verses and choruses are repeated far too many times, and when you add in the fact that the vocalist (and I hesitate to use the word) sings like he does, the gayness of this single is complete.

Listening to this is fucking torture, and I've done it a few times over for the purpose of the review. I would not recommend this to even the most fanatic NWOBHM fan, as there are no redeeming points to this whatsoever. The only reason it didn't get a lower score is that it was the band's first (and thankfully only) release, so you have to cut them some slack. But really, when the music sucks as hard as it does here, there is no excuse. An utterly terrible release.

Do you like Kill ‘Em All? What about Diamond Head? Did you feel Hetfield’s uncontrolled screams in a teenager voice were cool in Metal Up Your Ass and No Life til Leather? Well then this is for you.

Those who enjoy NWOBHM will find this band to be a lost gem in the flooded 80s market. With a very classic heavy metal sound – loud bass, thin guitar sound, simple drumming and loud vocals as leading role – Destroyer apparently only released this single. The overall sound of the band is very easy to frame; take Diamond Head-like guitar tone, diffuse it, add a loud bass, add pre-Kill ‘Em All garage sounding Metallica vocals and that’s how Destroyer sounds. The production is not very good; although all the instruments are perfectly audible, the vocals are a bit loud and the guitars sound a bit diffuse and low.

The single kicks off with “Evil place”; a fast paced tune, very trashy singing with a lot of screeches, good standard heavy metal drumming, a catchy main riff and bass lines accompanying the rhythm guitars. I love it when the guy screams “Eeeeeeeee-vil, place!” and then “IIaaaaaaaaaaoh!” – much better than Heatfield’s late era” yeeeeeeeeheeeeea”s. The guitar solo shows a capable guitar player deeply inspired by Diamond Head. Moreover, the last leads in the song are similar to “Am I evil?”s first leads after the drum intro – in a slower pace than Diamond Head, though.

The other song, “Stand and Deliver”, sounds a bit whinier and it’s not that good (although still is enjoyable). Not as fast as “Evil place”, the chorus is similar to the one in the previous song; scratchy, uncontrolled screams of “Deliiiiiiver”, “Deliiiiiiiver”, with a strong similarity to “The Ripper”s chorus. Of course, the occasional random screams are also present, and once again, the guitarist is the shining star, with another showy solo. Although the other members do not outstand, their performance is good, especially the bass player, who once in a while comes up with his own lines different from the rhythm guitars.

If you nearly are an old Metallica fan, you should check this out of curiosity, although apart from this anecdotic vocal coincidence, the music itself is good and worth checking. If you like this you should also check Diamond Head’s Lightning to the Nations and any of Metallica’s material up to and including Kill ‘Em All.
