Interesting... this is not the same Jag Panzer that owned every single one of your poseur souls on "Ample Destruction", nor is this the same Jag Panzer that would be kicking ass in a more progressive form on "Mechanized Warfare". And this definitely isn't the same Jag Panzer that released the horrible "Dissident Alliance" in 1994. "Chain Of Command" is an outing that is more akin to stuff like Fifth Angel, "Somewhere In Time"-era Iron Maiden or Queensryche. At this time, the band featured vocalist Bob Parduba, who for the most part does a pretty awesome job. Not a TYRANT job, per say, but he sounds like a pretty good 80's Power Metal singer. The title track, "She Waits", "Ride Through The Storm" and "Never Surrender" are completely in this style, all enjoyable songs. "Shadow Thief" is one of the catchier numbers and "Burning Heart" is the highlight of the album, with great hooks and excellent vocals. The cover of "In A Gadda Da Vida" is good fun, as is the dystopia-themed "Sworn To Silence". "Dream Theme" is a very interesting instrumental, integrating acoustic and electric parts, coming off very much like something heard from Fates Warning's "Awaken The Guardian". The instrumental goes through a few tempo changes, making it a rather progressive number in form. Actually, it's probably the most interesting point of the entire album. "Gavotte In D" is a nice interlude, leading into the bonus track "When The Walls Come Down". The bonus track is a nice 80's Metal balladic rocker, and one can tell that the track was never finished completely, because it fades out in the middle of the solo. The production on here is pretty fucking thin, and that is the only huge hindrance. Also, the synthesizers sound ghetto as hell, even for 1987 - they make the keys on Rush's "Grace Under Pressure" sound like a string ensemble. Besides these quirks, there's not really a bad song on here; its all by-the-book 80's Power Metal with really thin production. Kind of disappointing, seeing the innovation Jag is capable of, but it's not bad. I only recommend it to fans, though. Encyclopaedia Metallum

"Dissident Alliance" takes a pretty thrashy direction, sounding nothing very little like "Ample Destruction". Unfortunately this generated a backlash by fans. Also, since this is the first and only Jag Panzer album to not feature Harry Conklin on vocals, it makes this CD seem even further removed from Jag Panzer's galloping past. New vocalist Daniel J. Conca has a gritty, thrash voice that reminds me of James Hetfield at times, although a clone he is not. Personally I like this disc. There are some good, crunchy riffs, some memorable songs and the vocals seem to fit the mood and vibe of the music. Most of the material presented here is pretty heavy, pushing the boundaries of thrash and speed metal (ie. "Edge Of Blindness), but overall stay within standard heavy metal walls. Two ballads are found here as well, "Forsaken Child" and "Spirit Suicide". Conca does some clean, melodic vocal singing for these two songs and displays a bit of diversity. Personally I prefer the heavier stuff, but these two songs aren't bad or distracting either. No Life 'til Metal

This is the sound of classic Jag Panzer - like they'd never been away. After the not so well received "Dissident Alliance", Harry Conklin - he of the almighty voice that graced the nailed in stone classic "Ample Destruction" - returned to the fold. Also back on board was guitarist Joey Tafolla and along with Mark Briody, bassist John Tetley and drummer Rikard Stjernquist, they worked themselves into a frenzy, out of which "The Fourth Judgement" boiled forth. The last traditional metal album whose strength I likened to a "vanquishing potion" was Manowar's "Battle Hymns". But where that one was a roaring rampage of battle stained warriors trudging on gleefully amidst dirty riffs that pierced like unwashed swords, this one is a grim but theatrical masterpiece with stomping riffs and clean leads that cut as precisely as a cleaver. With Jag Panzer, you don't get the thrills and glory of battle, you get the bloody darkness of it. In all its suffocating might. It is a rich color with a deep, almost tangible hue and inside it is Jag Panzer wading through it and exposing it layer for layer by way of song. Appropriately enough, the opening track is titled "Black". Harry Conklin is the fucking bringer of ill tidings vocally on this one while Tafolla and Briody's layered guitars make it the more pleasing to the ear. But even more auditorily pleasing is "Shadow Thief" whose prog sensitive solos tremble and shake masterfully with the ultra theatrical dynamics of start n' stop. All ten tracks make for unforgettable listening. Some like "Future Shock" and "Ready To Strike" are deliberate slabs of nostalgia looking back to the "Ample Destruction" days while others like "Despair" and "Judgement Day" herald the new sound of the band. An unbalanced wall that agitates for more melody while piling on the heavy riffage. "Recompense" has one of the catchiest choruses I have EVER heard in metal and "Sonnet of Sorrow" is a slight verse of introspection that doesn't meander. Overall, an admirable collection. "The Fourth Judgement" is Jag Panzer unbridled and at their most basic. Every worthy fan should shower it with undying love. Encyclopaedia Metallum
