Lyssa looking to hit it big with hard rock

By ORLANDO ADAMS
Collegian Arts Writer

Introduced by WPSU's hard rock disk jockey Miss Metal as the band voted "most likely to make it big," the heavy metal band Lyssa took the stage of The Scorpion last Friday night ready for action.

Opening their first of three performance sets of the night with a string of covers of popular metal tunes, Lyssa managed to sneak in three of their own original songs. There was a problem with the sound system throughout the set with feedback filtering out the quartet, but Lyssa managed to downplay the problem by playing their tunes the best way they knew how. The end result was 45 minutes of good metal.

Friday night was their first performance before a long list of dates takes Lyssa on the road along the East Coast.

"We've been together for almost a year now, and we've been to Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania," said lead vocalist Jim Morsillo.

"Tonight is the first night of concerts we're going to perform before we hit the road again. We're booked up until April playing the bars and clubs."

Backstage after their first set, there was much concern with the sound system.

"I can't hear a thing," said Morsillo. "This is the first time we've used this sound system, but we'll be ready for our second set."

"We're saving our best stuff for last," said Vince Woungbauer, lead guitarist.

All of Lyssa's originals are considered their "best stuff," being fanatically requested by listeners of WPSU's heavy metal show. Lyssa made a demo tape of their songs titled One Shot Five, but venturous headbangers will be saddenedby the fact that the disk is still unavailable.

"Sold out," explains bass guitarist Dennis Linder. "We've met people while we were travelling that have taped it from friends and said that they really enjoyed it."

When asked about musical influences from major rock bands, Lyssa fails to mention one.

"We don't have any," said drummer Spike Morelli.

"We like hard rock. There's nothing in particular that comes to mind," said Morsillo.

"We don't really have any influences," said Linder. "When we do our cover tunes we try to make them our own. We try to create our own distinct sound."

One thing that is unanimously agreed upon is that Woungbaur is the principal songwriter for Lyssa.

"Usually I would write up to two or three songs a week, but now I haven't written anything since I've gotten back from Baltimore this summer," said Woungbaur. "Recently I was writing songs but they all sounded the same. They sounded different from the songs I wrote the week before though."

"When I write I try not to be too typical like Hey baby, baby, baby,"' said Woungbaur. "I also get turned-off by bands who try to write so many messages. The music we play is supposed to be fun."

Metalheads will be interested, just as the other members of Lyssa are already, to find that Woungbaur mentions Elton John, Rod Stewart and Michael Jackson when he thinks of influences in his songwriting.

"The band doesn't believe it, but I like Michael Jackson,"said Woungbaur. "I hardly listen to heavy metal that's being played out there now. At first I was interested in bands. Now I'm interested in songs."

Woungbaur also notices signs of maturity in his guitar playing abilities.

"When I first started I would hear something that someone does and say That's a good idea' but now I don't have that many influences right now because I'm trying to create on my own. I guess I'm growing out of it," said Woungbaur. "I like the violin."

Lyssa's previous experiences on the road should have prepared them for their upcoming string of dates. Lyssa has a total of three shows- per-week from now until April within a 100-mile radius.

"The road can get hectic sometimes, but we're ready to go again," stated Linder.

"We've just hit the bar scene around here recently, and we're enjoying it," said Morsillo.

One song from One Shot Five that Woungbaur mentions when reminded of the road and other problems that have faced the band in the past is a song titled "Keep the Dream Alive."

"We were in really bad shape for a while," said Woungbaur.

"We played in this old cover band at the time. One of the guys lost his girlfriend. We were broke. I couldn't find a job. We were getting shit on," he elaborated.

"The only thing we were doing was making people happy on the weekend when they to go out and wanted to have a good time, yet we were suffering the whole time through. Keep the Dream Alive' was keep pushing it no matter what."

For the adventurous metal fans who purchased Lyssa's One Shot Five, Lyssa showed feelings of deepest appreciation.

"I would like to say that I really appreciate those who bought it for giving it a listen to because everyone who has it likes it," said Woungbaur.

When asked if they were planning on going back to the studio any time soon Lyssa replied with a simple "no" but headbangers and basic rock n' roll lovers will have plenty opportunities to see Lyssa perform straightforward metal as they tour the East Coast.
