Quote:
The start of 'Well' sets up the album acoustic pop with a good voice in front of it. Really, that's about all you need to say. 'close the door, it's alright.' This song's great: lazy drums, vibrating guitar now and then, but the way the voice cries into the night (or indeed, down the well), and the clean production, are enough to carry this into Hit Land.
Flynn does all the vocals, and producer Kameel helps out on bass, guitars and string arrangements. Oh, and programming, let's not forget that. Even so, this is an acoustic-based present beneath the tree. Flynn's voice can go from soft like a sleeping rabbit to mournful need to angry promise. Think of him as the angry young man, born a crooner, so you want to listen to him complain. 'Living a Lie' is a slow song with some streaming vocals in the back that prove this theory. Geez, you almost feel good to be a basket case. Is there a soothing quality to the oil he possibly rubs on your wounds? If the lyrics were printed in the cd booklet, I could answer this more certainly. But whatever the tone of the song, it's enjoyable, much like Julian Lennon's 'Salt Water' years ago. You want to break your heart over some songs. You're a masochist.
Flynn gets close to rock in 'My World Is Gone', but he's basically a ballad king with, sometimes, non-ballad subjects. When he does go for the gold of love, it glistens. '1960s Girl' is one such bar of chocolate. The girls especially will love Flynn.
